How to deal with culture shock in Spain? My experience as a Mexican.

Moving to a new country always involves facing and adapting to cultural differences. As a Mexican living in Spain for the past eight years, I have learned a lot about how to see another country differently and enjoy these differences. Here are some of my experiences and tips for dealing with culture shock in Spain.

1.Language and Idioms

Although in Mexico and Spain we speak Spanish, there are many differences in vocabulary and idioms. I remember my surprise the first time someone said "Hostia!" or "Vale!" to me. To adapt, I started to learn and use these local expressions as well as different words such as ordenador, móvil,(computer and cell phone) without leaving out my Mexican accent that is part of me, which not only improved my communication, but also helped me feel more integrated.

2. Schedule and Rhythm of Life

In Spain, meal times and pace of life are different. Lunch is taken around 2-3 pm and dinner can be at 9-10 pm. At first it was a challenge to adapt, but little by little I adjusted my schedule and now I enjoy the long after-dinner meals and the relaxed nightlife.

3. Food and Drink

Spanish cuisine is diverse and delicious, but very different from Mexican cuisine. I missed my tacos, spicy sauces, tortas, spicy sweets, among others, but I opened myself to try new dishes that I now enjoy in a different way. I also learned to enjoy cañas (beers) and tinto de verano. Now, I combine the best of both cuisines in my daily diet.

4. Festivals and Traditions

Spanish festivities are unique and very different from Mexican ones. Living my first carnival in Badajoz was very fun and different, the Seville fair was an experience worth living because I think it is a very Spanish party and mixes the magic of the dances, food, party as well as the corpus of Granada that has become a party of its own because of its people and atmosphere. All this helped me to better understand the traditions and to feel part of them. My advice is to actively participate and enjoy these celebrations to feel more integrated.

5. Relationships and Communication

Spaniards can be very direct, which may seem abrupt at first. In Mexico, we tend to be more indirect and polite in our interactions. Learning not to take frankness personally and adapting to this form of communication helped me to strengthen my relationships here and have a more bearable life, sincerity is key to a good relationship and we should not be afraid to say what we feel or what we think.

6. Bureaucracy and Formalities

Adapting to Spanish bureaucracy can be challenging. Procedures are sometimes slow and complicated. The important thing is to be patient, organize your documents well and ask for help when necessary. Talking to other expats and locals provided me with valuable advice and support in this regard.

7.Friendships and Support Networks

Building a support network is crucial. At first, I sought out groups of Mexicans and Latin Americans in Spain, which helped me feel less alone. Over time, I also made Spanish friends that I met in the master's program and in my work, which enriched my experience and allowed me to learn more about the local culture.

8. Accept and Adapt

The key to dealing with culture shock is openness and flexibility. Accepting that there will be differences and being willing to adapt to them makes the process more bearable. Every challenge is an opportunity to learn and grow.

9. Maintain Your Own Culture

While it is important to adapt, it is also essential to maintain your roots. Celebrating your own traditions and sharing them with your new friends can be a wonderful form of mutual cultural enrichment. I have hosted Mexican dinners and shared our traditions, which has been very well received.

10. Enjoy the Trip

Finally, enjoy the trip. Living in a new country is an enriching experience full of learning. Every day is a new opportunity to discover something new and grow as a person.

Facing the culture shock in Spain has been a process full of challenges and rewards. With an open and flexible attitude, it is possible not only to adapt, but also to enjoy and appreciate the wonders that this beautiful country has to offer. I invite you to live the experience.
